Dog Friendly Beaches

There are a variety of fantastic beaches in Devon that are dog friendly all year round or at certain times of the year. Beaches which allow dogs all year round include East Portlemouth, Mill Bay, Salcombe Sands and Thurlestone which are all located in South Devon. The majority of other beaches allow dogs out of season, so between September and May.

Two Moors Way:

The rugged, windswept tors of Dartmoor National Park is a great place to explore with the dog. This extensive moorland is dotted with stone circles, cairns and stone rows which all date back from the Bronze Age.

If you are feeling brave and more importantly, fit you can try attempting the Two Moors Way which covers 103 miles. Starting at Ivybridge, this long trail takes you across Dartmoor and mid Devon crossing some of the wildest parts of Exmoor and finishing at Lynmouth. It can be walked in a week or over a series of a few days.

The Jurassic Coast:

The Jurassic coast covers 95 miles of truly stunning coastline from East Devon to Dorset. This extensive coastline has fossil-rich rocks which are thought to be 185 million years old, and it is from these countless fossil findings that the area was awarded World Heritage Site Status. The Jurassic Coasts runs from Exmouth all the way Studland, passing coastal towns such as Sidmouth and Seaton. It provides the perfect place for walking with its panoramic views across the Devon coast. Guided fossil tours are also available.

Agatha Christie Mile:

Torquay is set at the north end of Torbay which forms part of the English Riviera and is the birthplace of the famous crime novelist, Agatha Christie. The Agatha Christie Mile takes in 10 landmarks which are dotted along Torquay Harbour and seafront area. It is a relatively easy walk- it is reasonably flat and contains some fabulous views. Some of the landmarks include Beacon Cove in Torquay, Princess Gardens and hotels such as The Grand Hotel and the Imperial Hotel which was used as the setting in the novels ‘Peril at End House’ and ‘Sleeping Murder’.

The Dart Valley:

The Dart Valley Trail is some 16 miles long and takes in both sides of the River Dart in South Devon. It is made up of an estuary circuit covering 4 miles on either side of the lower river valley, plus an extra 8 mile path to the ancient borough of Totnes. It takes you through ancient woodland, a steam railway line, picturesque quays and one of the most beautiful rivers. The walk starts at the 400 year old cottage at Greenway Quay, where a lane rises up the hill bordered by woodland. It’s a great place for spotting wildlife.
