Cayman Islands Holidays – National Symbols

Like every country throughout the world, the Cayman Islands have national symbols. National symbols are intended to unite people by creating an iconic representation of the nation. They can be physical, visual or verbal.

National symbols are often rallied around as part of celebrations of patriotism or aspiring nationalism and are designed to be inclusive and representative of all the peoples of the national community.

The Cayman Islands have a national song, flower, bird and tree.

The national flower is the Wild Banana Orchid. There are two varieties of this orchid, one which originated on Grand Cayman, Schomburgkia thomsoniana var. thomsoniana, and the other Schomburgkia thomsoniana var. minor, which came from Cayman Brac and Little Cayman.

Both varieties have scented flowers with purple lips. The petals are predominantly white on the Grand Cayman variety, and the Sister Islands’ variety has slightly smaller flowers, with pale yellow petals. The flowers appear at the top of a long curved spike at the bottom of which cluster banana-like pseudo-bulbs that give this orchid its name.

The national bird is the Grand Cayman Parrot. This bird is a subspecies of the Cuban Parrot (Amazona leucocephala). It is endemic to the Cayman Islands – which means they are found nowhere else in the world.

The national tree is the Silver Thatch Palm. This tree has played an important role in the lives of Caymanians since the first settlers arrived on the islands in the early 1700’s. Like the national bird the tree is endemic to the Cayman Islands.

Its slender trunk often grows more than 30 feet tall. It leaves were was mainly used for thatching, but they were used to weave hats, baskets and fans.

The National Song was written in 1930 by Mrs. Leila Ross-Shier, who was an organist in the Presbyterian Church. “Beloved Isle Cayman” was composed in 1930.

BELOVED ISLE CAYMAN

O, land of soft, fresh breezes, or verdant trees so fair

With Thy Creator’s glory, reflected ev’rywhere.

O sea of palest em’rald, merging to darkest blue,

Whene’er my thoughts fly Godward, I always think of you.

Chorus

Dear verdant island, set in blue Caribbean Sea,

I’m coming, coming very soon, O beauteous isle to thee.

Although I wandered far, my heart enshrines thee yet

Homeland fair Cayman Isle, I cannot thee forget.

Away from noise of cities, their fret and carking care,

With moonbeams’ soft caresses, unchecked by garish glare,

Thy fruit with rarest juices, abundant rich and free,

When sweet churchbells are chiming, my fond heart yearns for thee.

When tired of all excitement, and glam’rous worldly care,

How sweet they shores to reach, and find a welcome there.

And when comes on the season, of peace, goodwill to man,

Tis then I love thee best of all, Beloved Isle Cayman.

The official national anthem is still God Save the Queen.

Optimizing Communication in Your Travel Agency With a Virtual PBX

Communication is the heart and soul of any travel agency. Agents not only keep in close contact with their clients, but they offer the personal services that only a professional and experienced travel agent can. By booking their clients’ trips; informing them of travel specials, deals, and tips; and by offering personalized suggestions and imaginative alternatives, travel agents rely on consistent personal communication to maintain close relationships. In today’s age of canned responses and mass e-mails that can seem impersonal and cold, it becomes even more important to establish relationships based on speaking person to person. New technology, like virtual PBX systems, that helps agents optimize time and efficiency in regard to communications not only provides better service and value to clients, but helps solidify the most important aspect of a sale: the one-to-one personal relationship between an agent and a client.

One reason why clients call travel agents is because they are looking for specialized information. Travel agents are great sources for finding out about the best deals, options, tips, special promotions, and giveaways to desired destinations. However, due to the fact that the Internet has sped up the time it takes for anyone to find information, a missed call could mean a missed sale, and the potential for the gap between the client and agent to widen in the relationship. However, a system like virtual PBX that is able to take every call and effectively generate leads would be invaluable to any travel agency. Virtual PBX systems effectively reduce missed calls and turn every call into an opportunity.

With virtual PBX, automated recordings letting callers know about special offers can greet every call. When a caller reaches an extension, they can be greeted with a recording for special promotions and giveaways, which allows travel agents to capture the caller’s information for lead generation and follow up. Providing information through virtual PBX systems has cost-cutting processes inherently built-in. Instead of spending resources, time, and money to mail out fliers and brochures, a virtual PBX system provides the same and more personal information over the phone. What makes virtual PBX inherently more valuable than printed brochures, however, is the fact that it involves two-way communication, from client to agent and vice versa, which is a far more effective way to close a sale.

The caller receives valuable information that he or she has been looking for, and with this new information from a virtual PBX, is more prepared and ready when he or she speaks with a travel agent. The caller has already been hooked and is interested when the agent follows up. Value is created twice – when the caller calls and receives information, and when the agent receives the caller’s information and is able to follow up. This new communication model is extremely efficient, as a call will never be able to slip through the cracks.

Virtual PBX also opens the door to many new possibilities in business, which may include cost-saving measures such as the possibility for telecommuting. Travel agents no longer have to be tied down to one single location to take calls and interface with clients. Instead, a virtual PBX allows for flexible call forwarding which enables travel agents to be mobile and quite accessible. The flexibility that an agent gains means that agents are better apt to multi-task and be more productive. Instead of waiting for a call at the desk, virtual PBX allows agents to work with one client and rest assured that if they are receiving multiple calls, those calls will not be missed. Agents can follow up with any call at any time without wasting any resources.

Because communication is so important for travel agents and their clients, a reliable system that also provides great value to every caller can go a long way to improve communication. Travel agencies turn every call into an opportunity, gathering vital information from each call so that agents can provide accurate follow up from newly generated leads. Callers that receive information they are looking for are more inclined to communicate with an agent that calls them back and are more open to a relationship with an agent. Call forwarding capabilities will also increase efficiency and cut waste by allowing agents to multi-task. Virtual PBX helps solidify relationships between clients and agents by improving and adding value to communication.

Travel List – Important Items to Bring on the Airplane

With the dawn of extraneous surcharges on flights, it has become increasingly important to pack smart. I have a tendency to go overboard in my packing, but the more I travel, the more I learn – less is more. I am proud to say that I no longer travel and check in my bags. In fact, the whole idea of waiting to check my bags, waiting to pick up my bags, the thought of my bags going missing, well, it is all too much for me. First, I want to get off the plane and just GO. Second, I panic at the though of losing my beloved clothes. Third, I hate the thought of carting all that crap along with me. So, that leaves me with figuring out an ingenious way to pack all of my stuff solely in carry-on bags. I will make one small note – this has worked for vacations of about two weeks. Anything longer and I may consider sending a bag via check-in. Ugh, maybe not.

I am not going to cover clothing items in this list, rather the items that are necessary to have readily available with you at all times on your flight. These things should be in the bag that goes beneath the seat in front of you, or easily able to be reached in the overhead above you. All of these items will make your plane flight slightly more enjoyable and in any flight over a couple hours, we all know how important that is.

  1. Socks – many times I wear shoes that don’t require socks. When I want to try to get comfortable, taking off my shoes and putting on some socks somehow gives me the illusion of being slightly cozy. SLIGHTLY. I fly coach (unless I have enough miles to bump me up to business), so any notion of comfort is a step in the right direction.
  2. iPod or mp3 player – Do not leave home without one. Some play movies, all play music. They help you drain out the sound around you and escape for a bit. It is also great to have your own headphones as the ones the provide on the plane are horrid. Much better to have your own that you know work.
  3. Magazines and books – another great way to pass the time. I tend to bring a few magazines and one good book. Anything more than that takes up too much space. If I finish the book or magazines, I pass them on to the flight attendants. They love this and you make some friends along the way! I can always pick up something new upon landing.
  4. Food/Snacks – this has become really important. Now that they are charging you for everything, and I really mean everything, having your own food and snacks is a lifesaver. I like items like trail mix, dark chocolate (for my sweet tooth), beef jerky, and granola or protein bars. These things don’t take up much space and are good for you.
  5. Eye pillow – Yes, sometimes I feel stupid too. But come on, who really cares. I don’t. Find a great eye pillow that fits your head and doesn’t give you headaches or too much squeeze. They are lifesavers for cutting out the lights outside your window, or from the moron in front of you who never turns his reading light off, even if it is 2:00 am.
  6. Noise canceling headset – I have yet to invest in one, otherwise I would provide you some suggestion on which one to buy, but I am on the lookout for a great deal. I know for a fact that Bose offers one considered top of the line, but I have a hard time spending that much (especially when I could get a new pair of jeans or a full outfit for that matter). I do hear these headsets are lifesavers and when I tried one on once, it was silent. No whirring of the engines, no talking, no crying, no snoring. Fabulous.
  7. Tissues – If you don’t have them you need them. Find a travel size pack and drop it in your purse or carry-on. You’ll thank me later when you are dying to blow your nose or something else equally sexy
  8. Rosebud Salve – This multi-faceted product will work as a lotion, lip balm, or even as an ointment for a dry nose, you can’t go wrong for $6.
  9. Neck pillow – These can be lifesavers in preventing that infamous tweaked neck. I like the ones that can be deflated if need be.
  10. Blanket or wrap – Like I have mentioned before, I love to wear either long cardigan or wraps as part of my airplane apparel. This is great as they double as a blanket and you don’t have to carry an additional item. Perfect since it can get chilly on the plane.
  11. Medicine – always have your basic headache med or painkiller just in case. Some people may also want to carry a decongestant. Also, don’t forget to have your daily meds handy if you are on a long flight.

I definitely am not going to spend the time telling you what to bring as TSA does a super-awesome job at that (note sarcasm here). Should you want to know the items you cannot bring, visit TSA’s website. Also, make sure your toiletries (toothbrush, hairbrush, feminine products, hand sanitizer, etc) are easily available. You may not need them, but having to hunt for them is never fun and annoying to all your neighbors. Should you have the extra space, also think about a portable DVD player, laptop, handheld game system, or games like Sudoku or crosswords, whatever tickles your fancy. (I am a Sudoku girl). Remember – there is no need to bring a DVD player and a laptop. The laptop does both. Right? OK, just making sure you were paying attention.

It’s really not that hard to save, and as long as you follow a few of these tips, you can really can save big!

Always use a comparison engine

The first thing that you want to do is always use a comparison engine. Places like Kayak, and others are great for doing this. What you can do is simply input the information, such as when you want to travel, where you’re coming from, etc. After it’s all inputted, they will find you the cheapest rate. If you’re not loyal to an airline, you can find a very reasonably priced ticket.

What Should Be The Theme For Your Stag Do?

You’ve been to clubs or casinos in earlier stag dos, you’ve had an open air barbeque and you’ve watched a football game with the guys. Have you had a themed stag do? If you have, then you know how awesome it is, if you haven’t then you’ve sure got something to experience.

Imagine going out to a bar, all dressed as superheroes. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, He-man. Every-Man all together, hitting the dance floor, well it sure is going to be a night to remember. You get to be a superhero, hang out with a few more, and have the time of your life. Add to that say an arm wrestling knock out tournament to see which superhero is the real deal will surely shoot up all your testosterone-filled fun.

What about ‘pimping’ up your stag do? All you guys dressed in those 1970’s style cheesy costumes with oversized wigs, and multicoloured clothes. It would not only be a hilarious time poking fun at each other, but you could really go all out crazy to suit your costumes!

You could go for a hospital theme, make the groom the patient and all of you could be doctors. The best part is that you’ll need and can easily have, nurses. This theme will work, for sure.

Cartoons, science fiction, jungle, cowboys, you name it. Themes are a good way to add the extra fun factor, it will make you laugh and it will also be so much more than just hanging out at a bar or club. Go crazy this stag do, and go crazy in style. Let’s see who can chug the most beer, Superman or Tarzan? And let’s see whether the patient really wants to get well soon, what with all the nurses to take care of him. Have fun guys.

European Car Travel Insurance Cover

Approximately twelve percent (12%) of UK motorists travel to European destinations every year and of these more than a third are unaware that they have too little European car travel insurance cover. They assume that they are fully insured to drive in Europe but what actually happens is that many UK insurers will downgrade the level of insurance cover on any vehicles taken abroad. By law they have to provide a minimum level of cover for driving in European countries but this is usually third party only.

There are basically two types of insurance cover. Firstly, there is the temporary cover which is ideally suited to holiday makers and people going on short visits. Then there is the more comprehensive cover which is specifically for people intending to stay in Europe for extended periods of time.

Some insurers will automatically offer comprehensive European car insurance cover for up to 90 days, valid in all EC countries with no requirement that the motorist must inform the insurer the intended dates of travel. This is ideal for holiday travellers and perfect for short business trips. Other insurers will want to know beforehand the date of travel and the duration of the trip. They will also inform you of the amount of free European car travel insurance cover you are entitled to and what additional cover is available.

Some companies will charge a little extra for comprehensive insurance including European breakdown cover. Something to be aware of, the cost of recovering a vehicle outside of the UK especially when there are no suitably equipped garages nearby to service the car can be extremely expensive. For instance, Auto parts in Europe for cars with right hand drives are not commonly available and the cost of returning a car to the UK could run into several hundreds of pounds.

One important document you will need to take with you and your insurer will provide is the ‘Green Card’, although this is no longer a legal requirement when travelling in Europe it can make life so much easier in the event of an accident. The green card is internationally recognized and confirms that you have the minimum level of car insurance coverage.

Finally if you do intend to spend more time in mainland Europe and require a longer term insurance cover it may be worth considering an international car insurance policy. Speak to your insurer, they will be able to advise you which policy would be best suited to your needs.

Granada Information – What is Happening About Graffiti in Granada?

It seems that graffiti is something that is unavoidable in most parts of the western world. And, just as in most other cities, there is graffiti in Granada too. But Granada has taken these four steps to control of this type of spray “art form”.

Now, I know some people admire graffiti painting found on buildings. They consider it to be an attractive form of modern art. And I agree, but only when it is done in the correct manner.

To make my viewpoint clear, generally speaking, I do not like graffiti art for the following reason..

In most cases it is done by people who give no regard for the wishes of the owners of the property upon which it is being sprayed, and thus, in these cases, the graffiti is just vandalism. However, if the graffiti sprayer has made sure that what he or she is doing is legal and that he or she has the permission of the property owner, then I can accept it. Unfortunately this rarely happens. And so even though the graffiti may be well painted and attractive in its own right, it should not be there.

And so what is Granada doing to control the spread of graffiti?

The First Step – Removal

Paint removal is a costly procedure and the Granada Ayuntamiento (city council) is investigating up to date cleaning systems for graffiti paint removal. For instance, just recently a company called “Quitar Graffiti Granada” (Remove graffiti from Granada) spent a half day cleaning graffiti – at its own expense – from the Moorish well of Zenete and surrounding area in the Albaicin. Granted, one of the reasons they did this was to (apparently) demonstrate how their products do not use abrasives and are ecologically efficient. But the well of Zenete did get cleaned at the same time.

On another front, a new type of cleaning agent is currently being tested which, when used, leaves an invisible coating on the material just cleaned. This coating makes it difficult for paint to adhere to it, which will make any future graffiti much easier to remove.

The Second Step – Prevention

Access has been made difficult on some of the sites attacked by the “taggers” (graffiti artists). Once the paint has been cleaned off, deterrent planting, using specimens such as prickly pears for instance, have been positioned around the site. There is just such a place near the Autovia of Granada and since these plants have been put in, the walls have been left unsprayed and untouched.

Third Step – The Law

A law was recently passed which brings a fine of up to 3,000 euros against anyone found guilty of spoiling vehicles, parks and gardens or listed buildings with “graffiti art”. And if under-age minors are found guilty of defacing property then his or her guardians/ parents can be held responsible for paying the fine. Applying this law should help deter even the most active tagger.

Fourth Step – Education

Several projects in Granada have recently taken place in an attempt to educate and direct the efforts of taggers away from damaging buildings and property.

One such project was a “first” for Spain when an underground car park in Granada was “decorated” by individual graffiti artists. The first floor of the car park was attractively “graffiti painted” to give the impression of wild landscapes mingling with fantastic characters such as nymphs. Subsequent feedback was obtained from the local residents before deciding on how best to paint the remaining three levels of the car park. Even though this project may be considered by some to be a waste of time and money, I believe that anything that can be done to re-educate and develop social awareness and responsibility is another step in the right direction.

Graffiti in Granada has increased over the last few years, and some of it is really attractive, and acceptable, because it has been done with permission of the property owner. But other examples of graffiti are not so well received.

Many private individuals and the Ayuntamiento are doing everything in their power to stop the wrong application of graffiti. I hope the prevention of this illegal “art form” is successful.
